Views on loneliness support groups

We asked people who have experienced loneliness what they thought about support groups that aim to help lonely people. They spoke about:
  • Why people would or wouldn’t go to loneliness support groups.
  • What kind of support would make people less lonely?

Why people would or wouldn’t go to loneliness support groups.

Stigma and feeling judged could put people off going to a loneliness support group. They told us that they worried it would make them appear desperate for friends.
Some felt that they wouldn’t have anything in common with the people they would meet at a support group, except for being lonely. They said that people need to have common interests or experiences to help start meaningful relationships.

One person described how: “I sometimes wish there were like support groups where you could just like sit in a circle with other autistic people and just meet them every week and it’s just set and you can just rely on, you know, somebody being there I think that would help like with the loneliness.”
