Online communities can help people get in touch with others who are affected by similar issues (for example, mental health problems), and support each other. This can help people feel less lonely.

Although some people talked about how social media can bring people together, they said that it has downsides too. Social media may pull people away from seeing people in real life and they questioned how deep and meaningful online friendships can be.

How social media can make loneliness worse.

Some people said that social media can be fake. People may use it to create an impression of being more happy, connected and successful than they really are. It can make people compare their own lives and feel that they are lacking something. Jodie said it could make you feel lonelier as “you feel like you’re looking through a window” to the life you’d like to have.

A few people felt that social media doesn’t cause loneliness, only makes it worse in people who are already lonely.
