Talking about loneliness

We spoke to people about what it’s like to be lonely and why it’s so hard to talk about being lonely and ask for support.

Most people told us they never talked to anyone about being lonely because they felt embarrassed and blamed themselves.

Martin says it’s difficult to talk about being lonely as a man from the North of the UK.

Some people were embarrassed about being lonely because they felt it meant that there was ‘something wrong’ with them. They thought that loneliness is seen as being the result of weaknesses in the person for example being awkward and lacking in social skills. Lorraine, for example, didn’t want people to know she was experiencing loneliness as a young mother in case people thought she was unable to cope.

People said that social media platforms made feelings of shame and self-blame worse.
