We talked to people about how pets can help people feel less lonely. Here we discuss:
For some, having a pet in the house brought comfort, joy, and love. Having a cat or dog could be a substitute for other social relationships.
One person talked about bereavement and getting a cat; “I got my cat like a few weeks after [a loved one] passed away and my cat was just amazing like to try and compensate for that loss really like I think.”
Tracy said there’s another kind of loneliness “when you’re in a house with kids that live in their bedrooms, and there’s just you. You end up talking to the dog, I’ve got a great relationship with my dog now, I think he hates me cos all I do is talk to him!”
For many people we talked to, the responsibility of owning a pet meant having someone to nurture and take care of which made them feel wanted and needed.
Some people found that owning a pet could bring opportunities to chat to other people.
