Dave

Dave's wife was diagnosed with relapsing-remitting MS in the early 1980s, having experienced symptoms for some time before then. She now is in the secondary progressive stage and Dave cares for her full-time at home. For him, planning is the key to managing MS and its effects on daily life.

    Ian's wife was diagnosed with MS in 1996, at the age of 42. They have both been disappointed with the care she has received in the NHS and Ian feels strongly that MS research and treatment is underfunded. They both try to maintain a positive attitude and to keep life as normal as possible.

    Patience's husband already had MS when she met him. He proposed to her on their first meeting and they married a couple of years later. Although he is now profoundly disabled, Patience is determined to create an effective care partnership with social services so that he can remain at home.

    Paul's wife was diagnosed with primary progressive MS in 2001. The main effects have been on her walking. They divide domestic tasks between them and have installed aids to mobility in the house. Despite his own health problems, Paul is optimistic, taking each day as it comes and not reflecting too deeply on what might go wrong.

    Tony's wife was diagnosed with relapsing remitting MS in 1991. Her condition had little impact on Tony's life at first but the symptoms gradually progressed in ways that have been life-changing. His wife is now completely dependent on him and the caring services which he co-ordinates.

    Chez's husband was diagnosed with MS in 1986, just a few months before they were married. He was 28 and Chez was 18. Despite all the challenges they have faced, and continue to face, Chez talks very positively about their life together.

    She met Charles in 1990, four years after he had been diagnosed with MS. They soon married and moved to the countryside, where they have lived happily ever since, despite progressive disability.

    Eric's wife was diagnosed with MS in 1996, though she first had symptoms thirty years before then. Her illness has progressed quite markedly since 2002 and Eric now looks after her full-time at home, with twice-daily help from paid carers.

    Karl's partner was diagnosed with relapsing-remitting MS in 2006, just after they had got married. They have moved to a flat on one level, close to local amenities and with wheelchair access. Karl sees managing the effects of MS as a partnership between them.
