Dementia diagnosis experiences

In this resource we talk to people living with dementia and their family members about their recent experience of receiving a dementia diagnosis.

This resource is aimed at people affected by dementia who are interested in hearing the experiences of others, and health and social care professionals who want to better understand how to support people through a dementia diagnosis.

People talked about what made their experience of the dementia diagnosis process good or bad and made suggestions for how professionals could better support them. They discussed:

  • The delivery of the diagnosis
  • Balancing honesty with hope about the future
  • Treating the person as an individual when breaking the news
  • The personal qualities of the professional delivering the diagnosis.
  • The environment in which the diagnosis was received.
  • How the meeting was closed and next steps.

These experiences were shared during interviews that were conducted as part of the DETERMIND Study.
