Nicola

Nicola is a 63 year old woman of non-British roots, and a single mother to her 26-year old daughter.

Loneliness has been a big part of Nicola’s life since childhood. She never felt she fit into any specific social group but also talked about problems with her parents. She saw her parents as overbearing, unwilling to allow her to develop her own personality and who were living through their children. Most importantly, Nicola’s dad made her feel invisible.

Nicola was a single mother and felt judged by society, leaving her feeling isolated and lonely.

Nicola has electromagnetic hypersensitivity, a disability that is not easily visible from the outside. She says this adds another layer of loneliness because the disability is restrictive but also because people don’t understand it and won’t make adjustments for her.

Nicola has made friends with people online who also have invisible disabilities and it has been invaluable to her. The lack of face-to-face contact can contribute to being isolated but the friendships do help her to feel less lonely.

Nicola explains that her parents were emotionally and physically abusive.

Nicola says people need take care of other living creatures.
