Elena
Elena is a 37-year old veterinary surgeon, originally from Eastern Europe. She moved to the UK six years before we spoke to her, for work purposes.
Elena talked about her loneliness as someone who experienced mental ill health and who had moved to live in a new culture.
Since adolescence, she felt “different” to her peers. She had social anxiety and depression which made it hard for her to socialise with other people but she still longed to connect with other people. Elena feels that her mental health problems have made it difficult to make meaningful connections with other people.
Elena also talked about how living in a foreign country made her lonely because of the unfamiliar culture, being away from her social circle. Her sense of disconnection to the culture got worse as she experienced discrimination. Elena said it is difficult to integrate into a new culture and she didn’t feel a sense of belonging.
Elena felt shame at the idea of being labelled as lonely. She feels that society is too focused on positivity and hope, and ignores all negative and complex emotions. She feels loneliness is a problem for society that’s caused by an individualistic culture where people don’t see family ties as important.
